There are three separate levels of gymnasts in the boy's Men's Junior Olympic Age Group Competition Program, Level 8, Level 9, and Level 10.
Optional gymnasts must compose their own routine based on difficulty, special requirements and bonus skills set forth by USAG.
The first optional class, Level 8, is an "Open Optional" level. This means their routine is constructed without mandatory guidelines as to difficultly and special requirements.
Level 9 is the first 'Junior Elite' level in the USAG Men's Program. It is still a modified optional class, relying on a combination of USAG and FIG rules to govern routine construction.
A Level 10 gymnast is a FIG Optional gymnast, meaning their routines have the same amount of difficulty, special requirements and bonus as international and Olympic competitors.
